The Government recently cut the rate of VAT on the supply and installation of solar panels from 13.50% to 0%. Smart Meters
Solar PV, also called Photovoltaic, uses the sun's energy to convert daylight into renewable energy. The electricity is then consumed within the home, reducing your need to buy energy from a supplier. When a Solar PV system produces more energy than a home needs, the extra energy can go to your immersion heater. Solar PV is not to be confused with Solar Thermal - while Solar Thermal heats water only, Solar PV gives you free electricity and hot water. An average size Solar PV install would include 10 panels and a hot water diverter with average price of €7,975 (before grant) but is dependant on site survey for accurate quotation. The price after grant of €2,400 for this 10 panel (4.1kWp) system would be €5,575. All installs with deposits paid since 1st May 2023, will benefit from 0% VAT and Solar Share are committed to maintaining pricing following this an-nouncement. Once installed, you can save an estimated €1,190 each year (based on 2,280kWh of solar electricity being self consumed and 1,220kWh being exported to grid). At current electricity price of 41c/kWh and microgen rate of 21c/kWh, your investment payback is an estimated 5 years.
All homeowners, including private landlords, whose homes were built and occupied before 2021 can ap-ply. This is defined as the date your electricity meter was installed. The grant value is calculated on the total maximum output of the Solar PV system, measured in kWp. The grant value is €900 per kWp up to 2 kWp and €300 for every additional kWp up to 4kWp. The total maximum grant value is capped at €2400. A post works BER assessment must be carried out before the grant can be processed.
